Iconic racing sim Gran Turismo is getting a film adaptation as well as the announced TV show overnight – and production companies Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are aiming District 9 director Neill Blomkamp to direct it. The Japanese giant’s video game adaptation initiative is flying after the $400 million box office success of Uncharted, but according to Deadline, this new project is still extremely early.
This means the plot is being kept under wraps, although of course the film will also be accompanied by the aforementioned TV series. Some sort of documentary following the burgeoning esports scene of Gran Turismo seems like a reasonable choice for TV, but we have no idea where the film will go. Maybe this will focus on license testing and tinkering with tuning sheets?
Clearly, the Gran Turismo series is a bit of a phenomenon, having sold 85 million copies worldwide across multiple PlayStation consoles, dating back to the original PS1. But it’s not the only series to get the adaptation treatment: a Ghost of Tsushima movie, The Last of Us TV show, Twisted Metal TV show, God of War TV show and Horizon TV show are all at different stages of production. , too.
