Researchers at the University of Central Florida (UCF) have built an artificial intelligence (AI) device that replicates the retina of the eye, according to SciTechDaily.

What makes this technology unique is that it is a combination of three different operations. Unlike the smart image technology currently available today which requires separate storage, data processing and sensing.
Therefore, the new technology will be faster and more compact, with hundreds of devices on a small chip. This can certainly be a game-changer in the world of artificial intelligence, as researchers now have the ability to do sensor-only computing with the use of a single device on a small platform.
In addition, it also expands the researchers’ previous work. They created brain-like devices that allow AI to operate in remote regions and space, but they weren’t fed images. Now they can add an image sensing capability to them that will result in synapse-like devices that would act as smart pixels.

How it’s made
The key to this technology is nanoscale surface engineering and it has been tested by having it detect and recognize a mixed wavelength image. He demonstrated that technology could discern patterns and identify them. In fact, the researchers achieved 70-80% accuracy, which means there’s a good chance that AI technology could be used in the hardware.
This technology can work for the artificial intelligence of robots. In other words, the channel will be used to transmit information to a robot’s brain. Researchers will be able to add this technology to existing hardware and make robots smarter.
It could also be used in the development of robots to perform complex tasks and make them autonomous. Finally, it will help them make a faster leap into AI and can also offer more interesting and useful applications to users.
For autonomous vehicles
AI is already used in a number of self-driving cars. Autonomous vehicles are able to detect nearby vehiclespedestrians, cyclists and even animals, all potential challenges to avoid.
The researchers said the device is so versatile, which is why it can be applied to autonomous vehicles today. It will enable safer driving in various conditions, even at night.
According to the researchers, this new technology they are developing could be available within the next ten years.
