Miracle League targets Fond du Lac for an accessible baseball complex

FOND DU LAC — An accessible recreational option is in the future for children in the Fond du Lac area, according to a baseball league that provides athletic opportunities for people with disabilities.

Miracle League of Fond du Lac plans to create a park and playground at Plamore Park, 495 W. Division St., accessible to everyone, based on ability. Facebook page of the Town of Fond du Lac.

The park would include a custom-designed Miracle League baseball field with a padded, rubberized, and completely flat surface to prevent injuries and optimize use for those with visual impairments or using mobility devices.

Miracle League and its field would support players with cognitive and physical disabilities and visual and hearing impairments, matched with a “buddy” to play baseball together, according to the Fond du Lac Miracle League website.

The Fond du Lac complex would also add an equally accessible all-inclusive playground and a multipurpose court for alternative activities, such as basketball or pickleball. A small car park, restrooms and a concession area are also provided.

The complex was designed to support many disabilities, including cerebral palsy, spina bifida, visual impairment, hearing impairment, muscular dystrophy, autism, Down syndrome and amputations, among others.

The National Miracle League opened its first resort in Georgia in 2000 and now has over 300 organizations in America, Puerto Rico, Canada and Australia.

The Fond du Lac chapter is offered by the non-profit organization Brooke Industries Inc. The the city council approved the recreation complex in 2017 and the league has been fundraising ever since.

The The 2022 city budget allocated up to $1 million in U.S. federal Rescue Plan Act money to build the complex this year, Assistant Comptroller Tricia Davi said in December.

A public information meeting will outline the plans at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Lakeside Park Pavilion, 71 Promen Drive.
